1998 Ornamental Turning Events
February 28 Quarterly Meeting at Baden-Powell House
- The Making of St Edward's Crown. George White is a man who has pushed plain turning, the forming of wood shapes and wood colouring to the extreme (They say that in every plain turner there is an Ornamental Turner trying to get out!). He has an excellent slide show and will be bringing samples of his work, jigs and fixtures. This promises to be an entertaining afternoon

May 9 Quarterly Meeting at Baden-Powell House
- Quiz - be prepared !
- Wrinkles of a Professional Turner
. Paul Coker is probably the most outstanding professional turner in OT and a recent example is shown. He seems to have won all the SOT and WCOT awards at some time or another. Surprisingly, a large amount of his equipment is home-made and he will be sharing some of his secrets with us which would make the Holtzapffels turn in their graves. Be warned!

June 24 WCOT Competions
- The Worshipful Company of Turners are holding their competitions this year and we compete for the Lady Gertrude Crawford Medal and the Twentyman award. The set piece this year is a flower vase limited only by your imagination. We should try and put on a good show of other work as well. The competition is judged at the beautiful and historic Apothecaries' Hall, Blackfriars Lane in the City of London and members are invited to attend . I have included entry forms for UK members only, to save on overseas postage. If you are an overseas member and wish to enter please let me know.
June 27/28 Special 50th Anniversary Summer Outing

Buffet lunches will be provided. On the evening of 27th there will be a Society Dinner (cost about 15 pounds per head followed possibly by a show or other entertainment. Members are welcome to attend for the whole weekend or just for one day. Those wishing to stay overnight are advised to book early because it will be during the holiday season (details of hotels/guesthouses can be provided). Names of those wishing to attend should be notified to the Secretary by not later than 1 June.
July 18 Quarterly Meeting at Baden-Powell House
- John Edwards will be presenting on the History of the Evans Lathe. Evans lathes come second to Holtzapffel in terms of finish but some would say it is a better lathe. John and several other members have researched this subject in some depth and the gleanings of this work will be presented. Members are also asked to bring along any items of Evans equipment which they may wish to display to complement this talk.
